This is a massive iron structure built in
the early 18th century by Maharaja Suraj
Mal, the founder of Bharatpur. It was sustained
even after a number of British attacks.
The fort has three palaces within the premises,
Kishori Mahal, Mahal Khas and Kothi Khas. |
Once it was the royal hunting preserve for
the princes of Bharatpur. It is one of the
greatest bird sanctuaries in the world with
over 400 species of water and migratory
birds. Every year in july and august, migratory
birds from Afghanistan, central Asia, Tibet
and Siberian cranes come here and spend
the winter in warmer climate. Excluding
birds one can find spoonbills , storks,
egress, herons, pelicans, ebis and grey
herons all over the park. |
