Lahul and Spiti is a small mountain area which is located between Ladakh and Tibet in the north and the Kullu valley in the south. It is just 51km from Manali, right after crossing the Rohtang Pass. Here, many of the peaks are over 6000m and the highest is Mulkila which is 6,500m. One can find some interesting Buddhist gumphas and secluded villages with some good trekking routs in this area.

About half of the people in Lahaul are Buddhist and the other half are Hindu. The local language is Bhoti, which is similar to Tibetan. If one wants to go to Tabo and Rekong Peo, the capital of Kinnaur, then he need the permits from the Home Affairs Office in Delhi, the Senior District Magistrate Office in Rekong Peo, Kaza or Keylong or the Deputy Commissioner in Shimla or Kullu. Rekong Peo and Kaza are the best places to to visit in this valley.
