Alwar
Previously it was a Rajput
state, until Sultan Balban seized the throne in the late
13th century. The legendary Maharana Partap Singh brought
it back under the Rajput in 18th century.It is just 150
Km from Jaipur and 170 Km From Delhi, situated between a
small hilly area of the Aravali range.
Apart from the history, this
city is rich with natural heritage, some beautiful lakes
and valleys.One can find the finest variety of birds and
animals here. Alwar has one of the well known wild life
sanctuaries in Rajasthan-Sarika.
PLACES OF INTEREST
The Fort
This huge fort was Constructed
before the rise of the Mughal empire.Infact, Babar had spent
a night at this fort and took away all the hidden treasures
to gift to his son Humayun. Akbar’s son Jahangir had
also stayed here for some time during his exile. The place
where he used to stay is called the Salim Mahal. The fort
was finally captured by Mharaja Pratap singh in 1775 A.D.
The fort has several gates like jai pole, Suraj pole, Laxman
Pole, Chand Pole, Kishan Pole and Andheri Gate. Also there
are some remains of Jal Mahal, Nikumbh Mahal, Salim Sagar,
Suraj Kund and many temples.

City
Palace or Vinay Vilas Mahal This
is a 18th century palace, which is the blending of
Rajput and Mughal styles of architecture. The ground
floors have converted into government offices and
district courts and the upper apartment is presently
a museum consisting rajput amd mughal paintings and
sculptures.

Government Museum
This museum has the bigest
collection of Mughal and Rajput painting of 18th and 19th
centuries and some rare ancient manuscripts in Persian,
Arabic, Urdu and Sanskrit.Some of the major attractions
are, ‘Gulistan’ or the garden of roses, Waqiat-I-Babri’
or the autobiography of Mughal emperor Babar and Bostan
or the garden of spring. There one can find the copy of
Mahabharata,the great epic painted by the artists of the
Alwar school of painting.
Purjan Vihar
This is a huge garden laid
out by Maharaja Shiv Dan Singh in 1868 A.D. The garden has
a beautiful setting called ‘Shimla’ which was
built by Maharaja Mangal Singh. This is a famous place for
spending time in summers.
